Seismic Measurements of Roll Waves in Debris Flows

چکیده
Accurate debris-flow modelling depends on the ability to simulate surging and pulsing behaviour. However, our understanding of these phenomena is starved observational constraints. Here we propose use seismic measurements, which resolve arrival coarse-grained roll wave fronts in debris flows at Illgraben, Switzerland. Roll waves likely play a key role flow pulses but are typically only observed with point measurements like depth gauges. We compare in-torrent force plate near-torrent records discuss how data can test existing theories.

Simulations Of Roll Waves Flows In Environmental Settings
In this paper we investigate the generation and structure of roll waves flows down a porous inclined plane and subjected to an applied surface shear stress. The unsteady equations of motion for the fluid layer are depth integrated according to the von Kármán momentum integral method accounting for the variation of the velocity distribution with depth. The slip boundary condition at the interfac...

The stability of a viscoplastic fluid film falling down an inclined plane is explored, with the aim of determining the critical Reynolds number for the onset of roll waves. The Herschel–Bulkley constitutive law is adopted and the fluid is assumed two-dimensional and incompressible. The linear stability problem is described for an equilibrium in the form of a uniform sheet flow, when perturbed b...
متن کاملDynamics of roll waves
Shallow-water equations with bottom drag and viscosity are used to study the dynamics of roll waves. First, we explore the effect of bottom topography on linear stability of turbulent flow over uneven surfaces. Low-amplitude topography is found to destabilize turbulent roll waves and lower the critical Froude number required for instability. At higher amplitude, the trend reverses and topograph...
متن کاملThe Physics of Debris Flows
Recent advances in theory and experimentation motivate a thorough reassessment of the physics of debris flows. Analyses of flows of dry, granular solids and solid-fluid mixtures provide a foundation for a comprehensive debris flow theory, and experiments provide data that reveal the strengths and limitations of theoretical models. Both debris flow materials and dry granular materials can sustai...
